Description
Toby Barrett settled down quickly to the running of Charity Sheringham’s small farm in Southshire. This, she felt, was a really useful piece of war work. All went well in the farming world until there broke out in the county a strange disease which attacked all kinds of livestock. The one vet of the district – Major Harper – seemed unable to do anything about it; in fact, cows and horses had a habit of taking a turn for the worse after he had injected them. Toby became very suspicious, and told her friends, Jane and Dick Trevor, that she felt something was wrong. On their advice she went to the police, but still the strange disease spread and farmers became more and more worried. It was then that a mysterious gipsy horse doctor came on the scene; he had remarkable healing powers in his dealing with sick animals. Soon after his arrival Toby heard of the disappearance of Dick Trevor who had been engaged on some government research work. His father – struck down by paralysis – could only murmur the names “Dick” and “Toby” as if they were in some way connected. Here indeed was a mystery, and Toby settled down to solve it with her usual vigour, and after many adventures she both discovered Dick and got to the bottom of the dread disease. An exciting story, with the background of farm life in wartime.
