"THE dream of my life!"  That was how Kathie Ferrars described it when the letter appointing her as form mistress of Intermediate V at the Chalet School arrived.

Well, she did find that in many ways she was in luck, for she went to a school where she found many friends and people ready to give a hand to a girl who was taking her first post.  But she was young and very inexperienced and, with the best will in the world, her home people had given her wrong advice.  The result was that she made mistakes, two of them really bad ones.  However, as the term went on, Kathie found herself becoming capable of tackling schoolgirls of all types, from responsible people like Mary-Lou Trelawney to imps of mischief like Margot Maynard and Heather Clayton.

It is true that Yseult Pertwee proved an almost insoluble problem, but Kathie was not the only member of Staff to find that.

Joey Maynard, still "a Chalet School girl," despite her large family and her years of authorship, expressed what the Heads felt when she told Miss Annersley, "You keep hold of her.  It's all there when she's got a little more sense; and she's going to make the kind of mistress we like to have in school."
