Description
Tall, good-looking Pat Evans is an arrogant and unpopular prefect at Melling, that small, happy and informal school. ‘Pat’, say the Lower Thirds, ‘is horrible’, and indeed, Pat is disliked by almost everyone and particularly Roddy Blake.
When the summer term opens, the shy and gentle headmistress, Miss Pickering, asks Franny, who is head girl, to befriend Pat and to encourage Roddy to be friendly, too. But ‘Leopards don’t change their spots’, is Roddy’s opinion. Yet, as the weeks go by, it begins to look as if Roddy is wrong. Even Susan, Roddy’s gay and lovable little sister, becomes convinced that Pat is nice and – after some misunderstandings! – Pat finds great happiness in friendship with Roddy and Franny.
Exciting and pleasant events are followed by examinations, during which Pat is accused of cheating and deception. Can it be true? It is Roddy who finds the real culprit and persuades her to own up. And so Pat is free of suspicion and able to enjoy to the full the wonderful party her parents give her – a most satisfying conclusion to this addition to the popular series of stories about Melling.
