This story of New Zealand Juliet at her English School, Queen Elinor’s, is one of Clare Mallory’s own favourites amongst her immensely popular books, and is sure of a warm welcome. The characters are extremely vivid, not only Juliet and her House Captain, Cara, who plays such an important part in the book, but truculent Bee, Inez who cannot get any history reference right, Lise the dabbler, gentle Faith, redheaded Phyllida with her flaming temper, Twigs Greentree, little Nicky. Readers of the Merry series know how real are this writer’s people, and will be eager to meet the girls at Queen Elinor’s. Clare Mallory is an excellent writer, much appreciated by those who are encountering her for the first time in the new Girl’s Gone By editions.
