Description
Melling, that delightful school, differs from most boarding-schools in that the majority of the pupils live not far away and can spend week-ends at home. This means that in this story family doings make a pleasant relief. The Blake and Lacey families – girls and boys – saw a lot of one another and their mixtures of temperament provide lively entertainment.
The main interest of the tale is, however, afforded by the appointment of the new head girl, Frances Warner – Franny – who seems, to some, too diffident to succeed her forceful predecessor. Nor is the sixth popular with the juniors, and the “Down with the Sixth” Society is formed. Its activities, however, soon come to an end when circumstances reveal to some of its members that, with a little backing, the head girl will prove the right one in the right place. Hockey, rags – though not impossible ones – small quarrels and jealousies, and finally the school play, carry on a story full of fun, humour and real character, and thanks to sturdy friendship Franny develops charmingly.
Those who have read Margaret Biggs’s previous stories about Melling will here find themselves surrounded by entertaining people who are already friends.
